A lot of people don’t think about retirement until they’re a few years away. The reality is, the transition out of the career world is just as significant to your life and your finances as the transition you went through when you first started working. There are a lot of big choices to make, and each one will have an impact on your future and your peace of mind.

We believe every American should have access to the information and resources they need to retire comfortably. We know how important information is, which is why we’re here to make sure you have the knowledge you need to make smart decisions concerning your financial future.

How Many US Adults Have Enough Saved for Retirement?

Not many. A study by Northwestern Mutual found that 21 percent of Americans have nothing saved. Another 10 percent have less than $5,000. When looking at those close to retirement, one-third have $25,000 or less saved for retirement.

Even 10 times that amount isn’t going to create a comfortable retirement, and that’s assuming you retire at 65. Experts recommend having at least $1 million to $1.5 million saved for retirement. If you plan on retiring earlier, you’ll need even more.

What a lot of people don’t realize is, even with social security benefits, you’ll still need a lot of money saved to cover your living expenses. With rising costs for essentials such as medical care, food and utilities, it’s important to have a financial cushion to ensure you can live well once you get older.
